The improved BCG could “prime” the immune system if given early in life. And this immune response could be boosted in adults by a “subunit” vaccine. The latter type of vaccine uses just a component of the organism, such as its DNA, to trigger the previously established immune response.
The traditional BCG vaccine protects against TB infection by enlisting immune cells called CD4 helper T-cells. These cells activate other immune cells called macrophages, which eat up invading organisms, alongside other defence mechanisms.
